SOOOO excited to be sharing another free sewing pattern this week. I meant to get this boys summer t-shirt free pattern out to you all a bit earlier in the season… but life just got busy. There is still some summer left though, right? Still time to sew short sleeve shirts? I’ll get a long sleeve version of this together soon, but for now, here is the summer version! My boys have been wearing their summer t-shirts all summer and they have been the perfect combo of roomy for play and a great fit.

T-Shirt free pattern – sewing pattern and tutorial
I wish I had taken a few photos before I turned the shirts into this sibling set.. but I was in a rush as we prepared for our China trip… so all the pictures already have the graphic on it. You can find the free BIG BRO iron on file here.
This shirt is designed to fit boys 18mths – 10 years… I say boys only because the fit is roomy. There is nothing to say you can’t make this for the little girls in your life though! I am hoping to get out a slightly more fitted shirt pattern for girls here soon!

Size based on the chart chest measurement, the fit is a bit loose, perfect for play!
A 3/8 seam allowance is included in the pattern. All seams should be sewn with this S.A. I highly suggest using woolly nylon thread in the bobbin and a double needle to hem the bottom and sleeves… I’ve had great success with this providing a stretchy hem that looks pretty professional without actually having a coverstitch machine.
My boys are wearing the 4 and 6 here and that seems to run pretty on course with what they are wearing in ready to wear sizes. The fit is roomy, but not too baggy. Okay, grab your free pattern and some knit fabric. You will need 1 yrd for the larger sizes and less for the smaller ones. {sorry it’s an estimate…} Cut out your pattern pieces for the desired size. The neck ribbing can be cut from the same fabric, as I did here, or from actual ribbing material.
With right sides together, sew the right shoulder seam.
fold the neck ribbing piece with wrong sides together to form a long neck binding. On the right side of the shirt, pin and sew the ribbing piece around.
On the right side top stitch on the main shirt body close to the neckline. Use a double needle with woolly nylon bobbin or a zig-zag knit stitch for this.
Sew up the other shoulder seam and the neck line should now look something like this.
On the side of the neck where you sewed the second shoulder I like to secure the stitching by adding reinforcement on the neck. Fold the SA over and sew down to back side of neck.
Open up the shoulders and pin and sew the sleeves right side together. Match shoulder seam with center of sleeve and then pin each side.
Fold the whole shirt right sides together and then sew from sleeve edge to bottom edge to sew the side seam. Make sure to catch all the layers where the sleeve meets the main body. It’s easy to get a hole in the armpit area. You can also add a tab tag to the side when you sew here if you want.
Hem the sleeve with your desired method.
Hem the bottom and you are finished!! You can probably sew up a bunch of these in a short time if you get going!!

I made so many T-shirts for my boys when they were little, except I didnt have a surger, I had to sue the zigzag technique. And you can save so much money sewing, I made all my ids clothes until they got about 13, then they dumped their seamstress.
Thanks for sharing on Friday Features this week, stop by for Wordless Wednesday as well.
Have a great weekend!

ha! I also made my mom stop sewing for me when I was a teenager… I’m glad my kids are young enough they still don’t care. We will see how long this lasts ;o)

I think it must be an issue with Craftsy? I would just suggest to try it again. Have you been able to download other patterns from craftsy before?
